Squeaky Ideas

JULY POST-I LIVE!!

Hello fellow Content Creators,

How is everyone doing today? First off, I would like to apologize for going silent for so long! I had a tornado rip through my life, job and health wise for the last year! (I changed jobs, had insurance and health issues that have caused so much chaos!) I also had to put down my guinea pig, Tofu, a week before Christmas. Then after New Years, another piggy (Miso, who survived) had surgery to remove a tumor. Now, while things have started to calm down, I am still trying to get the remaining situation clarified and prioritized.

Now, where to start? As you know, I have had many projects in the works since I started this blog. I have tried a lot of different things over the years with mixed results. Stumped and frustrated at my lack of progress since my last post, I took a step back and looked at this from a different angle. Besides setting a specific time of day to do project work, I wasn’t sure what else I could do to increase my progress. Since doing this myself wasn’t getting me anywhere, I decided to ask for help. I reached out to a few friends in game development, telling them of my situation. Boy, was their information helpful (but brutal as it smashed my denial into small pathetic pieces)!

Step one is figuring out a management system that helps me be consistent and hit my deadlines and goals. This week, I started to work on modifying the project management system called Agile, to suit a one person team. I have started to create a Trello board with the Agile method that I am currently modifying to make it work seamlessly with the help of a friend who does a similar system. When starting this, the first step I have had to do was to ask myself the most difficult question. What projects are the most important? It was pointed out (and I finally begrudgingly agreed) that I just had too much stuff going on. I wanted to prioritize increasing my art and writing skills as well as applying them to current projects. After much deliberation, I found that my art and writing skills were in equal importance to me. Focusing on that, I picked one big project to focus on for each subject. For writing, I chose my fantasy novel and writing short stories for it as I worldbuild and create scripts for my games. For art, besides self study, I am working on a concept sketchbook for my fantasy book and the sprites for my current game.

I do have some exciting news though! I also finished my first Game Jam in July! It was a 4 day Jam for the people who created the content for Game Maker’s Toolkit which was freaking intense! But, we finished and while I was exhausted, it felt fantastic to finally finish a game. I have worked on various games since college and all have fallen through for various reasons. Having finished one, I am over the moon with excitement and inspiration! While my ideas for the project weren’t chosen, I really liked my game pitch and decided to make it the best I can in one month with 2D art and the programming system Renpy. It will be tight! I need to make sure I stick to a schedule and follow that project management system! I decided to make this my main focus because it was light enough that I can finish a base model in a month or two, and it would give me the experience to work up to my Otome Game, then my Hidden Object game.

While I am updating this a bit early, I will go back to updating everyone once a week, ideally every Sunday! How are everyone’s projects doing? When was the last time you had another person look at it and give feedback? Look forward to seeing you guys next week! (I am aiming to have more photos of my current projects in a few days)

(Please excuse any errors, I am trying to find the best sleeping schedule for myself and I am exhausted :D)
